My Social Impact Leadership Philosophy

To me, social impact leadership is a balance of two core components: the consciousness of a greater responsibility to one’s community and a dedicated effort to addressing a fundamental need. In symbiosis with this concept, it is critical to empower those in the community I work with as well as peers that join me in this effort. Social responsibility and service are key principles when focusing outward on the larger community. Collaboration, active listening, and advocating for a point of view must also be considered when thinking of the internal part of any social work endeavor. I have been fortunate to serve as a founder and executive director of SOAR. I worked to establish a vision of providing unique leadership and character development programming, recruit passionate individuals dedicated to this cause, and form a relationship with our community partners. This experience has been deeply rewarding, both on a personal level and as part of my journey to becoming a versatile leader. I have learned a great deal about the value of competencies like systems thinking, organizational development, and acting in accordance with personal values. Ultimately, SOAR is committed to creating change. We are focused on providing a set of dynamic activities that help youth build foundational skills in leadership and character growth. The ability to identify a strong mission and work consistently towards a particular service is what is most needed to make a difference in the world. It is also imperative to ensure that my work aligns with what community partners need and find valuable to provide. Finally, having a team that is dedicated to a shared purpose where each person has a relevant and clearly defined role is key to implementing any kind of programming. Acknowledging others’ efforts, appreciating their diligence, and respecting their perspectives builds a healthy and sustainable environment for any organization. The unity that results allows the team to present a solidified stance to community partners and any group they work with.

WHY I LEAD

Leadership is more than agendas, meetings, and events. It fundamentally changes the way you see the world. My world has been transformed by being surrounded by leaders in organizations and now, being one. From the time I stepped into the Purdue campus, I felt connected to the JMHC. I found an incredible community of leaders that empowered me to pursue such opportunities. That was a very sharp contrast to the hesitation and trepidation I experienced as a younger child. I want every child to have confidence in their character and the opportunity to develop and have lifelong empowerment. I started SOAR to infuse, instill, and cultivate maximum potential within those kids. I want hesitation to be replaced with character and trepidation overwritten with leadership strategies. I am a firm believer in having fun programming that explores deeper themes in leadership. However, I want the activities to be founded in research. Academic growth is a huge passion of mine, so merging the two creates an idea that I am deeply committed to. Finally, founding SOAR gives me a chance to cultivate a culture of community for others within the JMHC. I can share my skills and effect change.
